A Response Objective Is Not a Repair Commitment
Written and maintained by Haink's infrastructure team · Verified against the Lenovo Premier Support for the Data Center datasheet and the February 2026 Premier Support Plus announcement, 29 August 2026 · authorized-channel, entitlement verified before payment
Support gets bought by tier name. Someone picks the middle option, the line item is small next to the hardware, and nobody reads what the number attached to it actually promises.
Three things decide whether that purchase does anything for you. What the base warranty already is — which on ThinkSystem is not stated in the product name. Whether the hours you are buying are a response objective or a repair commitment, because those are different products. And whether the entitlement physically exists at the address where the server will sit.
Start with what you already have
Base warranty on current ThinkSystem platforms is encoded in the machine type, not in the model name. On the SR650 V4, 7DGC is one year and 7DGD is three; on the SR630 V4 it is 7DG8 and 7DG9; on the SR665 V3, 7D9B and 7D9A. Same server, different starting position — and the support conversation is meaningless until you know which one is on the quote. The full decoding is in MTM and part numbers.
Base warranty is reactive: something fails, you raise a case, parts and labour are covered. What it does not include is a named owner for the incident, a guaranteed clock, or anyone who will talk to your hypervisor vendor.
What Premier Support adds
Lenovo's own description of the model is the useful part: "Lenovo Premier Support is a single-point-of-contact support service. We own and manage the support incident from open to closure." Concretely:
- Direct access to senior technicians around the clock, by phone, ticket or live chat — "across select countries and languages", a qualifier worth returning to below.
- Onsite dispatch for parts and labour on every tier.
- Collaborative third-party software support. Lenovo engages with Microsoft, VMware, Red Hat and Nutanix on your behalf rather than telling you the fault is on the software side. On a hyperconverged estate this is frequently the single most valuable component, because that is exactly where the "not our problem" boundary usually sits.
- Coverage extendable to five years across the tiers.
The three tiers
| Tier | Hours | Response options | Also includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premier Foundation | 9×5 | Next business day | Onsite dispatch, parts and labour |
| Premier Essential | 24×7 | 4 to 24 hours | Adds YourDrive YourData |
| Premier Advanced | 24×7 | 2 to 6 hours | Adds YourDrive YourData; aimed at mission-critical |
From the Lenovo Premier Support for the Data Center datasheet. All tiers extend to five years.
Premier Support Plus, and the distinction that matters most
Announced on 26 February 2026, Premier Support Plus is the top tier for server environments and shifts the model from reactive to proactive. What it carries:
- AI-driven proactive and predictive support with Call Home automation — issues are detected early and support cases and parts dispatch are opened automatically, before anyone in your team notices.
- Preventative maintenance through wellness dashboards and firmware health checks.
- A designated Service Engagement Manager for onboarding and periodic service reviews.
- A 4-hour onsite response objective for critical issues.
- Keep Your Drive — failed drives stay with you rather than going back to the vendor.
- Coverage across 75+ markets.
- And, from the management side: each Premier Support Plus entitlement carries an XClarity One Standard licence — so price the support decision and the management-licence decision together rather than in separate conversations, or you will buy the same thing twice.
Response objective against repair commitment
Read that four-hour figure carefully. It is an onsite response objective: an engineer is aiming to be there within four hours. It is not a commitment that the machine works again by then.
The commitment version is a separate product. Lenovo offers Committed Service Repair as an optional add-on, with a six-hour onsite repair commitment. Note that the repair number is larger than the response number, which is exactly right and exactly why the two are not interchangeable — and why a comparison between two vendors' "four-hour support" is meaningless until you establish which of the two things each is selling.
The practical test for any support quote, from anyone: does this number describe when someone arrives, or when the workload is running again? If the answer is arrival, and your requirement is uptime, you have not bought your requirement.
The coverage question, which decides everything in some markets
Two qualifiers in Lenovo's own material do the work here. Premier's round-the-clock technician access is available "across select countries and languages". Premier Support Plus covers "75+ markets". Both are genuinely large numbers. Both also mean there are places where the answer is different.
For estates in the Gulf, Africa, Central Asia and much of Southeast Asia, the entitlement to verify is not the contract summary but the address:
- Is the response commitment actually offered at this installation address, or only in the country's capital?
- Where is the parts depot that serves it, and is a customs boundary between the depot and the rack?
- Is there a resident engineer, or does the clock assume someone flies in?
- Which language does the 24×7 line answer in, at 3 a.m. local?
Get those four in writing, per site, before the support tier is chosen. Where the honest answer is that cover is thin for every vendor, holding local spares is better value than paying for a service level that cannot physically be delivered — a point that applies equally to Dell and HPE, as we set out in the three-way vendor comparison.
Keep Your Drive is a compliance feature, not a convenience
YourDrive YourData on Premier Essential and Advanced, and Keep Your Drive on Premier Support Plus, let you retain failed drives instead of returning them. For most estates that is a nice-to-have. For anything under data-residency obligations, regulated data or a sovereignty requirement, it is closer to mandatory — a failed drive leaving the country is a data-transfer event that no policy document anticipated.
If residency is part of why the hardware is on-premises at all, this line belongs in the requirement rather than in the options list. Our cloud repatriation material covers the wider version of that decision.
What to buy
| Situation | Buy |
|---|---|
| Non-critical workloads, spares held locally, in-hours operations | Base warranty — confirm whether the machine type gives you one year or three |
| Production estate, mixed hypervisor, in-hours team | Premier Foundation — the third-party software collaboration is worth the tier on its own |
| 24×7 production with a defined availability target | Premier Essential or Advanced, chosen by the response window you can defend |
| Continuous availability, large estate, thin internal team | Premier Support Plus — the proactive Call Home model does the work your team would otherwise do |
| The requirement is uptime, not attendance | Add Committed Service Repair — the response objective alone does not cover it |
| Regulated or residency-bound data | Any tier with drive retention, and check it explicitly |
| Site where cover is genuinely thin | Lower tier plus local spares — do not pay for a clock that cannot run |
Get support priced per site, with the entitlement confirmed
Send this and we price it — no questions back:
- Machine types on the quote, or serials for hardware already installed
- Installation address for each site
- Availability target per site — and whether you need response or repair
- Term required: three years, five years, or to a fixed end date
You get firm pricing, availability and delivered lead time within one business day.
Only have the site list? Send the site list and the availability targets. We confirm which tiers are genuinely deliverable at each address, where the parts depot sits, and price the ones that are.
Frequently asked questions
What does the base Lenovo warranty include?
Reactive parts and labour cover for the term encoded in the machine type — one year or three, depending on which machine type is on the quote. It does not include a named owner for the incident, a guaranteed response clock, or engagement with your software vendors.
How long is the base warranty on a ThinkSystem server?
It depends on the machine type, not the model name. The SR650 V4 uses 7DGC for one year and 7DGD for three; the SR630 V4 uses 7DG8 and 7DG9; the SR665 V3 uses 7D9B and 7D9A. Always confirm which one is being quoted.
What is the difference between Premier Support tiers?
Premier Foundation is 9×5 with next-business-day response. Premier Essential is 24×7 with response options from four to twenty-four hours and adds YourDrive YourData. Premier Advanced is 24×7 with two-to-six-hour response for mission-critical workloads. All extend to five years and include onsite dispatch for parts and labour.
What does Premier Support Plus add?
Announced in February 2026, it adds AI-driven proactive and predictive support with Call Home automation that opens cases and dispatches parts automatically, preventative maintenance through wellness dashboards and firmware health checks, a designated Service Engagement Manager, a four-hour onsite response objective, Keep Your Drive, and coverage across 75+ markets. Each entitlement also carries an XClarity One Standard licence.
Does a four-hour response mean the server is fixed in four hours?
No. A response objective describes when an engineer aims to arrive. Repair within a committed window is a separate product — Committed Service Repair, an optional add-on with a six-hour onsite repair commitment. If your requirement is uptime rather than attendance, the response tier alone does not cover it.
Is Premier Support available everywhere we operate?
Not necessarily. Lenovo describes technician access as available "across select countries and languages" and Premier Support Plus as covering 75+ markets. Verify per installation address: whether the response commitment is offered there, where the parts depot sits, whether a customs boundary is involved, and which language the out-of-hours line answers in.
Can we keep failed drives?
Yes, with the right tier — YourDrive YourData on Premier Essential and Advanced, Keep Your Drive on Premier Support Plus. For regulated or residency-bound data this is closer to a requirement than an option, because a failed drive leaving the country is a data-transfer event.
