Juniper Networks Under HPE

Hewlett Packard Enterprise completed its acquisition of Juniper Networks on 2 July 2025 (US$40.00 per share, ~US$14 billion). Juniper now sits within HPE's networking division as HPE Juniper Networking, and former Juniper CEO Rami Rahim leads the combined HPE Networking business. How to Choose Juniper — the Decision

  1. Start from the layer and role. Campus access, campus core, DC leaf/spine, WAN edge, backbone, firewall or wireless — that fixes the product family (EX / QFX / MX / PTX / SRX / Mist) before you look at models.
  2. Match the fabric speed to the workload. 1/2.5/10G to the desk, 25G to the server, 100/400G at the spine, and 800G (QFX5240) only where an AI/GPU training fabric needs it — don't over-buy speed you won't fill.
  3. Decide the operations model. Mist AI cloud with Marvis for AI-native assurance, or on-prem Junos Space where cloud management isn't an option. This choice drives subscription cost as much as hardware.
  4. Size PoE and uplinks (campus) or oversubscription (DC). Budget PoE++ for Wi-Fi 6E/7 APs; size uplinks and spine oversubscription to real traffic, not line rate.
  5. Confirm channel and subscription before payment. Authorized sourcing, serial/entitlement check, and the matching Mist/Marvis subscription quoted with the hardware.

How to Size a Juniper Campus & Fabric — the Numbers

Campus worked example — a 300-user floor: budget ~1.2–1.5 access ports per user (desk, phone, Wi-Fi AP) → ~400 ports → 8–9× EX4400-48MP with a PoE++ budget for Wi-Fi 6E/7 APs, into a dual EX4650 aggregation pair with 25G uplinks at roughly 3:1 oversubscription, all under Mist for assurance.

Data-center / AI worked example — a 4-rack GPU pod: QFX5240 (800G) or QFX5220 (400G) spine, with QFX5130 (400G) or QFX5120 (25/100G) leaves matched to the server NIC and rail design; size the perimeter firewall to inspected throughput (e.g. SRX4300 at ~90 Gbps/RU), not the datasheet line rate. Junos vs Junos Evolved — does the OS version matter when I buy?

Junos OS is the classic OS across EX, SRX and most MX; Junos Evolved is the Linux-native rewrite running on newer high-end platforms (PTX and 400/800G QFX such as QFX5240) for richer telemetry and programmability. For most campus and enterprise purchases you're on Junos; for high-speed DC and core you may be on Evolved. Feature parity is high — the practical differences are platform support and some automation/streaming-telemetry capabilities. Which QFX should I buy for an AI / GPU training fabric?

For GPU/ML training you want a lossless Ethernet fabric. The QFX5240 (Broadcom Tomahawk 5, 51.2 Tbps, up to 64× 800G in 2U) is the spine/leaf built for AI fabrics and managed with Apstra; QFX5220 (400G) is the prior-generation spine. Leaf choice follows the server NIC — QFX5130 (400G) or QFX5120 (25/100G). Do I need a Mist subscription — and what happens if I stop paying it?

Mist is cloud-managed and subscription-based (per-AP, per-switch and per-router, plus optional Marvis). If a subscription lapses, the hardware keeps forwarding traffic on its last-known configuration, but you lose cloud management, AI assurance, Marvis and the ability to push new config until it's renewed.
