How to Choose Huawei — the Decision

  1. Screen destination and end-use first. Huawei availability turns on where it ships and what it's for — settle that before spec'ing anything (see above).
  2. Match the family to the workload. Compute, AI, storage, network or security — and remember standard x86 is xFusion, not Huawei.
  3. For AI, weigh Ascend vs the alternatives by jurisdiction and ecosystem. Ascend/CANN is strong in its market; outside it, CUDA maturity and availability often decide.
  4. Size storage and fabric to usable/effective capacity and throughput — not raw or port count (see below).
  5. Confirm authorized channel, serial and warranty region before payment. Huawei warranty and support are region-scoped — we verify yours matches the destination.

How to Size Huawei — the Numbers

OceanStor Dorado sizes like any enterprise all-flash: buy usable and effective, not raw. After RAID-TP and system reserve you get usable; Huawei inline dedup/compression then gives effective — budget a conservative reduction ratio and leave ~20–30% free for snapshots, performance and growth. Worked example: ~300 TB effective primary for virtualization plus databases at a conservative ~2.5:1 is ~120 TB usable NVMe → a Dorado 5000 V6 or 6000 V6 sized to sustained IOPS and a sub-millisecond latency target. On the network side, size a CloudEngine fabric by server-NIC speed (25G at the leaf, 100/400G at the spine) and real oversubscription, not port count. Rules of thumb, not guarantees — we size the exact models to your dataset, latency target and fabric.

Huawei x86 Servers — Now xFusion (Divested 2021)

The Intel-based FusionServer x86 line is no longer a Huawei product. In November 2021, under US sanctions that cut Huawei's access to Intel server processors, Huawei sold its x86 server business — the FusionServer line together with its R&D team and leadership — to xFusion Digital Technologies (backed by a Henan state-owned enterprise). FusionServer V7 (Sapphire Rapids) and the newer V8 generation are therefore supplied today under the xFusion brand, not Huawei.

Huawei TaiShan ARM-Based Servers

Huawei TaiShan servers are powered by Huawei's own Kunpeng 920 ARM-based processors, offering an alternative compute architecture for organizations seeking Chinese domestic processor platforms for cloud infrastructure, big data, and distributed computing workloads. TaiShan servers are widely deployed in Mainland China by government, finance, and telecommunications organizations pursuing domestic technology strategies.

TaiShan servers run openEuler (Huawei's Linux distribution) and support mainstream cloud and big data frameworks including OpenStack, Kubernetes, Hadoop, and Spark.

Is Huawei Ascend a real alternative to NVIDIA for AI?

In its core market, yes — the Ascend 910C powers Huawei's CloudMatrix 384 (Atlas 900 A3 SuperPoD), a rack-scale supernode positioned against NVIDIA GB200 NVL72-class systems, and it's deployed at scale in China. Outside that market the calculus shifts: NVIDIA's CUDA software maturity, framework support and broad availability usually win where both can ship, and Ascend availability is constrained by export controls and HBM supply. Ascend's CANN software stack is capable but younger than CUDA. For China-market AI builds Ascend is a genuine option; elsewhere we'd usually compare it honestly against NVIDIA before recommending.
