SR630 Is Intel and SR635 Is AMD. The Last Digit Tells You.

A Lenovo price list is readable at a glance once you know the scheme, and slow going until you do. The model name carries three things: what kind of machine it is, roughly where it sits in the range, and — the one most people miss — whose processor is inside it.
What the name does not carry is the warranty term, the cooling variant or any workload certification. Those live in the machine type, which is a different field entirely.
The prefixes
Lenovo groups its own documentation by these, which is the most reliable evidence of what they mean:

The last digit: 0 is Intel, 5 is AMD
This is the single most useful thing on the page, and it holds across the entire current rack line. Lenovo's own documentation separates "Rack Servers with Intel CPUs" from "Rack Servers with AMD CPUs", and the split falls exactly on the final digit:

So SR630 and SR635 are not two revisions of one machine — they are Intel and AMD platforms that happen to sit next to each other in the catalogue. Same for SR650 and SR655, and for SD650 and SD665. Anyone reading a quote and assuming the higher number is the newer model has misread it entirely.
The middle digit tracks height, within a family
Inside the mainstream two-socket range the middle digit follows form factor. On the AMD line, Lenovo documents SR635 V3 and SR645 V3 as 1U rack servers and SR655 V3 and SR665 V3 as 2U. The Intel line runs the same way: SR630 V4 is 1U, SR650 V4 is 2U. Which of those two you want is a bigger decision than it looks — see SR630 V4 against SR650 V4.
The leading digits place the machine in the range
- 1xx and 2xx — entry, typically single-socket. SR250 V3, ST250 V3.
- 5xx and 6xx — mainstream two-socket. This is where most enterprise estates live.
- 6xx with a GPU focus and 7xx — accelerator-dense. SR670, SR675, SR680a, SR780a, SR685a.
- 8xx and 9xx — Lenovo's own "mission critical" grouping: SR850 V4, SR860 V4, SR950 V3. Four-socket and above — and a genuinely different product, not a larger two-socket server.
The suffixes

The V-number is the one that misleads most often. It labels the chassis platform, not the processor generation, and the two have come apart: the AMD platforms took 5th Gen EPYC without a version bump, so a V3 on an AMD quote is current silicon while a V3 on an Intel quote is the previous generation. What the name does not tell you
Three things that decide real money are invisible in the model name and live in the four-character machine type instead:
- Base warranty term. SR650 V4 ships under 7DGC for one year and 7DGD for three — identical name, different entitlement.
- Cooling variant. The liquid-cooled configurations carry their own machine types — 7DK1 on the SR630 V4, 7DK2 on the SR650 V4.
- Workload certification. SAP HANA configurations of the SR650 V4 sit under 7DLN.
And one caveat in the other direction, which is worth knowing before you rely on the machine type alone: the SR650a V4 is documented under the same machine types as the SR650 V4, 7DGC and 7DGD. So the machine type resolves warranty and cooling, but does not always separate a base platform from its accelerator-dense variant. Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SR630 and SR635?
Processor vendor. SR630 is Intel and SR635 is AMD — Lenovo groups its rack servers into Intel and AMD categories, and the split falls on the final digit: 0 for Intel, 5 for AMD. They are not two revisions of one machine.
Does a higher model number mean a newer server?
No. The number places the machine in the range and identifies the processor vendor; it says nothing about age. SR665 is not newer than SR650 — it is the AMD two-socket 2U platform where SR650 is the Intel one. Generation is carried by the V-number, and even that is not a reliable indicator of silicon age.
What do SR, ST, SD and SC mean?
SR is rack, ST is tower, SD is multi-node and the Neptune direct-water-cooled supercomputing line, SC is supercomputing. SN was the blade-chassis compute node line and is legacy. DM, DG, DE and DS are storage arrays rather than servers.
What does the "a" in SR650a V4 mean?
Accelerator-dense variant of the base platform. The same convention appears on SR680a and SR685a. Note that the SR650a V4 is documented under the same machine types as the SR650 V4, so the machine type alone does not distinguish them — check the feature codes.
What does the "i" suffix mean?
Inferencing. Lenovo documents SR650i V4 and SR675i V3 as a separate category of inferencing servers, alongside the Intel, AMD and mission-critical rack groupings.
Which models are the mission-critical ones?
The 8xx and 9xx series — SR850 V4, SR860 V4 and SR950 V3 — which Lenovo groups under that heading itself. These are four-socket and above, against two sockets on the mainstream 5xx and 6xx range.
Where is the warranty term written, if not in the model name?
In the four-character machine type. The SR650 V4 uses 7DGC for one year of base warranty and 7DGD for three; the SR630 V4 uses 7DG8 and 7DG9. Cooling variants and workload certifications also get their own machine types.
