Catalyst 8300 Edge uCPE: Cisco Says There Is No Replacement — but There Is an Option

Cisco's end-of-life bulletin for the Catalyst 8300 Series Edge uCPE is one of the rare ones that offers nothing in the migration section: "There is no replacement available for the Cisco Catalyst 8300 Series Edge uCPE and select NFVIS Licenses at this time." What it offers instead is trade-in credit through the Technology Migration Program and whatever inventory exists in Cisco Refresh.

That reads as a dead end, and for the largest deployments it is. But the Catalyst 8200 Series Edge uCPE — C8200-UCPE-1N8 — remains a current, orderable product running the same NFVIS platform. Whether it works for you comes down to one number: how many x86 cores your virtual network functions actually need.

The ordering window has closed; the shipping window closes 30 October 2026.

End-of-life was announced 31 January 2026 and end-of-sale was 1 August 2026. Last ship date is 30 October 2026 — after that, nothing new leaves Cisco. Support continues to 31 July 2031, so this is a supply problem for the next several years, not a support problem. Affected part numbers: C8300-UCPE-1N20, C83UCPE-20C, and the FL-NFVIS-BASE/K9 and FL-NFVIS-ESS/K9 licences.

What the platform actually was

The Catalyst 8300 Edge uCPE is a branch server that runs NFVIS, Cisco's KVM-based virtualization operating system, and hosts virtual network functions instead of dedicated appliances — a virtual router such as the Catalyst 8000V, a virtual firewall, ThousandEyes, WAN optimisation, third-party VNFs proven under KVM. One box at the branch replaces a stack of them, managed centrally through Cisco SD-WAN Manager or locally through the NFVIS GUI and NETCONF APIs.

The gap is real: 40 per cent of the cores, half the maximum memory, and gigabit instead of ten-gigabit interfaces. This is not a like-for-like substitute and Cisco is right not to call it a replacement. It is, however, the same platform and the same management model — and a great many uCPE deployments never used twenty cores.

The decision comes down to your VNF footprint

NFVIS reserves memory for itself and hands the remainder to the guest functions, and each VNF has a core and memory allocation. So the question is arithmetic, not architecture: add up what is actually running.

A typical branch stack — a virtual router, a virtual firewall, and a monitoring agent — fits comfortably in eight cores. A stack that also runs WAN optimisation, a third-party SD-WAN function, a voice gateway and a couple of application VMs does not. The practical test is to look at the current NFVIS resource allocation on a representative site rather than at the platform's ceiling.

The licences went with it

Worth noting because it catches people planning to redeploy: the bulletin covers not only the hardware but the FL-NFVIS-BASE/K9 and FL-NFVIS-ESS/K9 licences. Anyone planning to move an existing 8300 uCPE chassis to a new site and license it fresh needs to check licence availability, not just hardware availability.

What to do, in order

  1. Pull the actual NFVIS resource allocation from a representative sample of sites — cores and memory in use per VNF, not the platform maximum.
  2. If it fits in eight cores and 64 GB, the C8200-UCPE-1N8 is the continuity path, on the same NFVIS and the same management. Check the interface count: the 8200 has four copper and two SFP against the 8300's four 10G SFP+.
  3. If it does not fit, decide before 30 October 2026 whether to secure remaining 8300 inventory or to re-architect the branch.
  4. Either way, check the service contract position. Support runs to 2031, but only on covered units.
  5. Include the NFVIS licences in whatever you order — they are part of the same end-of-sale.

What replaces the Catalyst 8300 Edge uCPE?

Cisco names nothing — the bulletin states there is no replacement available. The Catalyst 8200 Series Edge uCPE remains a current product on the same NFVIS platform, at eight cores against twenty and 64 GB maximum memory against 128 GB. It is a continuity option for smaller VNF stacks, not an equivalent.

How long can I keep running the 8300 uCPE?

Last date of support is 31 July 2031, so a covered unit has years of runway. The constraint is supply: end-of-sale passed on 1 August 2026 and the last ship date from Cisco is 30 October 2026.

Can I still buy one?

From channel and secondary-market inventory, yes, and Cisco Refresh carries remanufactured units subject to availability. Nothing new ships from Cisco after 30 October 2026.

Will my VNFs run on the 8200 uCPE?

It depends on the resource allocation, not on compatibility — it is the same NFVIS platform. Add up cores and memory per virtual function across a representative site. A router, firewall and monitoring agent normally fit in eight cores; a stack with WAN optimisation and application VMs on top normally does not.

Do the NFVIS licences also go end-of-sale?

Yes. FL-NFVIS-BASE/K9 and FL-NFVIS-ESS/K9 are in the same bulletin, so redeploying an existing chassis to a new site requires checking licence availability as well as hardware.
