How to Size Cisco Switching & Firewalls — the Numbers
Switching sizing is ports, PoE budget and uplink oversubscription; firewall sizing is inspected throughput, not the line-rate number on the datasheet.
Worked example — a 300-user campus floor: budget ~1.2–1.5 access ports per user (desk, phone, Wi-Fi AP) → ~400 ports → 8–9× Catalyst 9300-48P with a PoE+ budget for APs and phones, into a dual Catalyst 9500 core with 25G uplinks at roughly 3:1 oversubscription. Size the NGFW to the traffic you'll actually inspect with IPS/TLS on — a Secure Firewall 3100 covers a few Gbps of inspected throughput; don't buy from the raw firewall number. Rules of thumb — we size the exact model to your port count, PoE and inspected throughput.
Licensing — the Hidden Cost
Cisco hardware is only half the price. Catalyst runs on DNA/Cisco Networking (Essentials vs Advantage) tiers, the new Smart Switches carry a mandatory 3-year Cisco Networking Subscription, and Secure Firewall needs threat/URL/malware subscriptions to do its job. Budget licensing with the hardware — it's the line item that surprises buyers most.
When Cisco Isn't the Answer
We stay neutral, because Cisco's premium isn't always justified:
- SMB or distributed retail? Cloud-managed Meraki — or a challenger — is often simpler and cheaper than full Catalyst + Catalyst Center.
- Greenfield with AIOps as the priority? Juniper Mist and HPE Aruba Central (both now under HPE) are genuinely strong alternatives worth comparing.
- Hyperscale data center? White-box switches on SONiC/NOS can undercut Nexus at scale if you have the operations team.
- Cisco earns its premium on TAC support, ecosystem breadth and ubiquity — not always on price. If none of those matter to you, shortlist alternatives.
Five Expensive Mistakes We See in Cisco Procurement
- Gray-market "bargains." A too-good Catalyst price usually means re-marked, counterfeit or previously-registered gear with no TAC or warranty. Verify serials and channel first.
- Wrong license tier. Buying the switch and discovering you need DNA Advantage — or a mandatory 3-year Networking Subscription on Smart Switches — blows the budget. Quote licensing with the hardware.
- Buying end-of-life platforms. HyperFlex (now Nutanix-based), ISR 4000 (→ Catalyst 8300) and ASA 5500-X (→ Secure Firewall) are past their prime — don't design new networks around them.
- Catalyst where you needed Nexus. Campus switches in a data-center leaf-spine role cost you throughput and features; match the family to the fabric.
- Undersized data-center spine. A 100G spine on a 400G build throttles everything — the Nexus 9364C-GX is 100G; 400G is the 9364D-GX2A / 9800.
